Patrouille de police / Police patrol

Hier, première patrouille de police, armée, afin de lutter contre le bûcheronnage dans la réserve mais aussi tout le long de la rivière Rungan. A Partir de maintenant, une patrouille de la sorte aura lieu toutes les semaines pour confisquer des troncs et poursuivre les bûcherons.

Suite à cette première patrouille, nous recevons déjà des menaces de représailles… Protéger la forêt de nos amis, humains et animaux, se paye à ce prix...

Yesterday, we did the first police patrol, armed, to fight illegal logging inside the protected area but also all over the rungan river. From now on, a police patrol will be carried out every week, supported by Kalaweit to confiscate logs and arrest loggers.

Following this first operation, we've already been threatened by the loggers, but protecting the forest for our human and animal friends had to be done that way… We have to take the risk.

English Resume:

I’m at the project to tag the python before releasing him back into the wild. He is 3.10 meters long. But before we leave for the forest, I want you to meet “Dori”, a very young female gibbon. Her mother was killed by a python and now we have to take care of Dori who lives at the quarantine complex with Inea. Dori doesn’t like contact with humans. She is very different from Inea who has been hand-raised and who loves human contact...

Finally I leave for the forest with the python. The forest is flooded so I have to go with a small boat. We will release the python inside the “Hampapak Reserve” (1000 hectares of good secondary forest) protected by Kalaweit and One Voice.

Il va bien ! He is doing ok !

Lumpiau va bien. Il se remet doucement et reprend un peu de l'appétit… Nous pensons qu’il est hors d’affaire maintenant ! Nous venons aussi de retirer le bandage du macaque Nanda…

Nous surveillons de très prés à l’heure actuelle la situation sanitaire du projet car nous sommes au cœur d’une grande montée des eaux, et une partie de l’île d’Hampapak est inondée.

Lumpiau is doing ok. He is getting better and starting to eat normally. We think he will be fine now! We also removed the bandage from Nanda, the long-tailed macaque…

We are actually watching the sanitary situation of the project very carefully because we are in the middle of a very big flood. A big part of Hampapak Island is flooded.

Lumpiau

Voici "Lumpiau”, le gibbon sauvé dans le nord de la province.
Il a souffert de malnutrition pendant 12 ans, et est gravement infecté par des parasites. Il est encore très faible au projet, mais nous avons bon espoir qu’il survive. Lumpiau a été attrapé par des braconniers lorsqu’il était bébé et à vécu dans cette petite cage durant toutes ces années.

À palangka Raya, Nanda se remet très bien de son opération.

This is « Lumpiau », rescued by Kalaweit from the North of the province. He has suffered from 12 years of malnutrition and is badly infected by parasites. He is still very vulnerable and still sick at the project right now, but we are very hopeful he will survive. Lumpiau was caught by poachers when he was a baby and has been kept in this very small cage for all these years…

At Palangka raya, Nanda, the long-tailed macaque, is doing ok.

English Summary. « Les Missions de Chanee Ep 1, Part 1 »

In Palangka Raya, I get a call from the Kalaweit team at the project. A Python tried to kill one of our gibbons, and the team has caught him. I need to go to the project to tag the python and release him far away from the project, in the south of the Hampapak Reserve. I have to travel to the project using the Kalaweit speed-boat. On the way, the impact of the deforestation is clearly visible… Some of the river is brown because of the erosion and loggers send the logs all over the river… But the engine stops and I get stuck in the middle of nowhere…

At the project I find the team with the python. Every year 3 to 4 pythons approach the project trying to kill our animals. This python can easily kill a human and eat a child of 4 to 5 years old. In the past I found a python who was eating a wild pig...

Cobra Royal / King Cobra

Il y a deux jours, devant l’île d’Hampapak, un cobra royal était sur le point de mourir. Il était pris au piége dans un vieux filet de pêche… La tête sous l’eau, prise dans le nylon, il n’avait que quelques minutes à vivre avant de mourir noyé… Nous avons du faire très vite et prendre le risque de l’attraper pour lui venir en aide…. Manipuler à mains nues un cobra royal… une chose nouvelle à Kalaweit ! Quelques minutes plus tard il repartait dans la forêt avec un microship sous la peau !

2 Days ago, in the front of the Hampapak Island (Kalaweit Borneo), a King cobra was in trouble… He was stuck upside down in a fishnet and was going to die within the next 5 minutes… We reacted quickly and took the risk of catching him…actually to save him! Handling a king cobra was a new experience for me! A few minutes later he was released back into the wild with a microship under his skin!

Gibbon

L’équipe (Wandy et Nanto)est partie ce matin pour essayer de sauver le gibbon dans le Nord de la province… Nous n’avons que très peu d’informations le concernant. Ils arriveront sur place demain matin.

The team (Wandy and Nanto) left this morning to try to save a gibbon in the North of the province. We don’t have a clear picture of the situation yet. They should arrive at the location tomorrow morning.

Klassi, Nanda, etc..

Klassi est de retour dans les quarantaines... Il semble aller un peu mieux, mais comme nous sommes au cœur de la saison des pluies, l’équipe n’a pas voulu prendre le risque de le laisser dans la grande volière. Nous lui portons toute l’attention dont il a besoin... Dés que les beaux jours vont arriver il repartira dans une grande volière, loin de la clinique.

Nous venons aussi de recevoir un appel pour aller récupérer un gibbon dans le nord-est de la province. L’histoire est encore floue… et l’équipe par au début de la semaine. Je vous tiens au courant.

Nanda va aussi très bien.

Klassi is back in the quarantine complex. –Klassi has been tested positive for typhoid in the past- He is doing ok but because of the very rainy season, we don’t want to take the risk to let him stay in the enclosure, far away from the clinic. We give him all the attention he needs, and when the rain stops he will be back in the large enclosure with the others.

Also we received a call to rescue a gibbon in the north-east of the province. The story of that gibbon is still very unclear, and the team will leave Palangka Raya to get there by the beginning of next week. I will let you know what happens.

L'operation de Nanda / Operation of Nanda

Aujourd’hui nous avons enfin effectué l’opération... Nanda -macaque crabier- a été amputé. L’opération a durée 2 heures et s’est très bien passée. Il se porte bien. Il n'a pas encore retrouvé sa volière, car il est toujours sous observation. Son bandage doit être remplacé tous les 3 jours. Nanda est d’une résistance incroyable, juste après son réveil, il recommençait déjà à s’alimenter !

Today we did the amputation… the operation took 2 hours ! Nanda is doing ok now. He is not back in his enclosure yet, because we still need to keep an eye on him and we need to clean-up and change his bandage every 3 days. Nanda is amazingly strong… Just after the operation he was eating already.

Will let you know what happens next.

"Uu"

Voici "Uu", l’un des gibbons reçu en Janvier dernier à Kalaweit Sumatra en provenance d’un site appelé Cikananga dans le centre de Java. Lui comme les autres a vécu dans de terribles conditions pendant des années. Aujourd’hui il est dans une grande voliére, dans la forêt, et peut écouter les autres gibbons et siamangs ainsi que le bruit des vagues sur la plage toute proche. La vie semble plus paisible pour Uu et les autres. Malheureusement nous estimons encore à 6.000 le nombre de gibbons détenus encore illégalement, dans des conditions misérables, à Bornéo, Sumatra et Java… Ils ont tous besoin de Kalaweit… et Kalaweit a besoin de vous pour les aider…

This is "Uu", one of the gibbons received by Kalaweit Sumatra last January, from a place called Cikananga, in central Java. Uu, like the others, suffered for so many years in a very small cage… Today he is in a large enclosure, in the forest, and can listen to the others gibbons and to the waves on the beach, very close to his enclosure. His life looks better now, and we hope he can be with a female very soon. Sadly, we estimate there are still around 6.000 gibbons in private hands in Borneo, Sumatra and Java! They all depend upon Kalaweit to have a better future... And Kalaweit need you to help them !

Tortue / Turtle

A Bornéo tous les animaux de la réserve sont marqués. Cette fois –hier- nous avons attrapé cette tortue qui est repartie avec une puce électronique sous sa carapace ! Dans le passé des orangs-outans, des pythons, des loris, etc… ont été attrapés et marqués de la sorte. L’objectif : créer un effet de dissuasion dirigé vers les braconniers, mais aussi reconnaître un animal qui serait trouvé sur un marché...

In the Hampapak Reserve we tag all the wild animals. This time we caught a turtle, and after a few minutes we released her with a microchip. In the past we've done the same with orangutans, pythons, slow Loris, etc… The goal is for the animals to be easily identifiable in case poachers catch them and try to sell them on the market.

Gibbons a Sumatra et Bucherons / Gibbons at Sumatra and loggers

Voici un ami -Pipit- de Sumatra (Gibbon agile)… Cette fois l’équipe de Kalaweit Sumatra s’apprête vraiment à recevoir au début du mois prochain des gibbons de Kloss (originaire des îles Mentawai –très en danger-). Nous avons enfin tous les feux verts et malgré tous les séismes dans la région, l’équipe est toujours très motivée. Nous avons aussi de nouvelles informations sur des lieux où seraient détenus des gibbons de kloss.

A Bornéo, nous connaissons maintenant le nom des bûcherons. Demain j'ai un meeting avec l’équipe pour décider des actions à prendre.

This is a friend -Pipit- from Sumatra (Agile gibbon)…. The team in Sumatra is waiting to receive a group of kloss gibbons (originally from the Mentawai islands –very endangered-) at the beginning of April. We've finally got the green light to go ahead and even with all the earthquakes in that region the Kalaweit team is still very motivated. We've also received new information about the locations of new captive kloss gibbons.

In Borneo we already know the name of the loggers (who cut the tree in the reserve). I will have a meeting tomorrow with the staff about what action we should take.

Nanda

Deux vétérinaires (en plus de l’équipe Kalaweit) ont vu Nanda aujourd'hui. L’amputation est prévue pour Samedi. Je vous tiens au courant.

2 Vets (+the Kalaweit medical team) checked Nanda Today. We plan to do the amputation next Saturday. I will let you know what happens.

Bûcherons / Illegal Logging

Depuis la création de la réserve d’Hampapak par Kalaweit en collaboration avec One Voice, jamais des actes de bûcheronnage n’avaient été constatés… Mais aujourd’hui lors d’une balade en forêt qui aurait du être un plaisir je suis tombé sur ce tronc (la machette sert d’échelle). L’arbre a fraîchement été abattu et le bois (le tronc de 15 mètres) a été sorti de la forêt vraisemblablement au moment où la forêt était inondée… C’est un coup dur. L’arbre abattu non loin du lac où se trouve le projet est un message clair nous étant destiné… L’heure suivante j’ai organisé une réunion de crise avec l’équipe. Premier objectif : Arriver à mettre un nom sur les coupables.

Kalaweit travaille en étroite collaboration avec les populations locales (création d’école, aides financières, médicales et pédagogiques) pour éviter ce genre de problème. Cette fois Kalaweit doit se montrer très ferme.

Since the creation of the Hampapak Reserve by Kalaweit in collaboration with One Voice, no logging activities have been reported. But today, during a trek (which should be a pleasure...) I found this tree cut done by loggers… This tree has been cut very recently (in the middle of the reserve) and the log has already been extracted from the forest, probably when the forest was flooded. This tree is a clear message to Kalaweit…and we have to take action now. An hour after I found the tree I held a crisis meeting with the staff. First goal: we have to find the name of who did this!

Kalaweit maintain very good relations with the local communities (creation of school, annual donations, medical and education costs paid by Kalaweit) to make sure things like that do not happen… This time Kalaweit has to take strong action.

I will let you know what happens next.

Nanda / Poor Nanda

Notre ami Nanda, présenté via le blog il y a quelques mois (http://chanee.centerblog.net/2.html), va bientôt subir une opération. En effet, Il ne semble être paralysé que d'une seule jambe (la droite), alors que sa jambe gauche souffre simplement d'un manque de musculation. Nous allons amputer sa jambe raide pour qu'il puisse réapprendre a marcher (a 3 pattes) et muscler sa jambe saine. Aujourd'hui il ne se déplace qu'en se traînant car il est encombré par sa jambe raide.
Ce sera une expérience traumatisante pour lui mais qu'il doit vivre, je le crois, pour son bien être... Il pourra de nouveau grimper dans les arbres j'en suis sure. Je vous tiens au courant

Our friend "Nanda" (long-tailed macaque) will be operated on soon... We need to amputate his right leg -which is already paralyzed- to make him use his left leg. It will be a very traumatic experience but we don't have any choice if we want him to climb trees one day... At the moment he only uses his hands to move... I will let you know what happens this week.
This macaque was rescued a few months ago after cruel people cut his tail and penis, beat him several time on his back, etc... He is doing well now at the Kalaweit Care Center.

From now all my messages will also be in English! (well… bad English but I will try to do my best !)

Nouvelles de Borneo

Au projet nous avons perdu Remi ce matin, emporte par la typhoide. C'est un coup dur. Fildar est lui aussi malade (Infecte par des parasites et la Typhoide), mais nous restons optimistes.

Photo de Dracula (vous comprenez pourquoi l'equipe lui a donne ce nom). Il a un probleme -congenital- de dentition.

Du cote des bonnes nouvelles, La construction de la television Kalaweit avance vite et pourra probablement emettre en septembre prochain (soutenue par la fondation arcus, WSPA et IPPL). Nous commencons aussi un tournage de 6 mois destine a la realisation d'un film pour la "BBC" (Natural World) et une serie de 6 episodes pour la chaine internationale "Animal Planet" en Mai prochain. La production envisage aussi d'aider financierement Kalaweit.

Inea, Dori, Romeo, Klassi, et les autres vont bien.

Des varans a Sumatra

Je suis donc de retour de Sumatra ou nous avons eu 4 seismes en 3 jours... Les gibbons et l'equipe se portent bien. Si je n'ai pas communique avant c'est simplement a cause des problemes lies a l'ancien serveur du blog...

Voici une photo d'un varan capture pour etre marque. Une semaine avant un varan de la meme taille a mange le chat de Kalaweit !
